Glossary
A type of propolis produced by bees in Brazil from the resin of Baccharis dracunculifolia (alecrim-do-campo plant), distinguished by its green color and uniquely high concentration of artepillin C, a prenylated phenolic compound with documented anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activity.
While most propolis worldwide comes from tree bud resins (poplar, birch, oak) and is brown to dark reddish-brown, Brazilian green propolis stands apart. Produced by honeybees collecting resin from Baccharis dracunculifolia (a plant native to the Brazilian cerrado savanna), green propolis has a distinctive olive-green color and a chemical profile dominated by artepillin C, a prenylated p-coumaric acid derivative not found in significant quantities in any other propolis type.
Artepillin C is the biomarker compound of green propolis, typically comprising 5 to 10% of the extract by weight. Research has demonstrated: potent anti-inflammatory activity (inhibiting NF-kB and multiple inflammatory cytokines), broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects (active against MRSA, Candida, and several pathogens), antitumor activity (inducing apoptosis in several cancer cell lines in laboratory studies), and immunomodulatory effects (enhancing macrophage activity while reducing excessive inflammatory responses).
Green propolis commands significant premium prices in the Japanese and Chinese markets, where it is consumed as a daily health supplement. Japan imports the majority of Brazil's green propolis production. In skincare, green propolis extracts are used for anti-inflammatory facial treatments, acne spot treatment (antimicrobial + anti-inflammatory), and anti-aging formulations (antioxidant protection). The price reflects both genuine bioactivity and the limited geographic production area.
Different, not necessarily better. Green propolis is richer in artepillin C (unique anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity). European brown propolis is richer in CAPE (caffeic acid phenethyl ester, with its own potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant profile). Both have strong evidence supporting their bioactivity. Green propolis commands higher prices due to limited supply and strong Asian market demand.
Yes. Green propolis tinctures, capsules, and extracts are available from specialty supplement retailers and online. Look for products specifying 'Brazilian green propolis' and standardized artepillin C content. Prices are higher than standard propolis products, reflecting the premium source material.
