Glossary
A thick, dark green oil cold-pressed from the nuts of the Calophyllum inophyllum tree, native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Tamanu oil contains calophyllolide, a unique anti-inflammatory compound, and is traditionally used for wound healing, scars, burns, eczema, and acne.
Tamanu oil holds deep cultural significance in Polynesian, Melanesian, and Southeast Asian traditional medicine. In Fiji and Tahiti, it is called "the green gold" and has been used for centuries to treat wounds, burns, insect bites, rashes, and skin infections. The oil is unique in appearance: dark emerald green with a thick, nutty aroma, unlike any other skincare oil.
Tamanu oil's bioactivity comes from compounds found in no other plant oil. Calophyllolide is a potent anti-inflammatory coumarin that inhibits inflammatory pathways specific to skin tissue. Delta-tocotrienol (a form of vitamin E) provides antioxidant protection. Calophyllic acid and inophyllolide contribute to the oil's documented antimicrobial and wound-healing effects. These compounds work synergistically: anti-inflammatory + antimicrobial + tissue-regenerating action makes tamanu remarkably effective for damaged skin.
A study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science demonstrated that tamanu oil accelerated wound closure and promoted tissue regeneration. Research on burn treatment found faster healing with fewer complications when tamanu was applied to partial-thickness burns. In acne studies, tamanu's antibacterial activity against C. acnes combined with its anti-inflammatory properties reduced both lesion count and post-inflammatory redness.
Apply 2 to 3 drops directly to scars, acne spots, or areas of hyperpigmentation. For general facial use, mix with a lighter carrier oil (jojoba, rosehip) at a 1:3 ratio, as pure tamanu is quite thick. Use nightly for scar reduction (results typically visible after 4 to 6 weeks of consistent use). Can be applied to stretch marks, surgical scars, and minor wounds for accelerated healing.
Tamanu oil has a comedogenic rating of 2 (moderately low). Most acne-prone individuals tolerate it well in targeted application (spot treatment on blemishes and scars). For full-face use on very oily or acne-prone skin, dilute with a lighter oil like jojoba and patch test for 2 weeks before committing to regular use.
Clinical and anecdotal evidence supports tamanu oil's scar-improving effects. The combination of calophyllolide (anti-inflammatory), tissue regeneration stimulation, and antimicrobial action creates favorable conditions for healthier scar formation. Results are most noticeable on newer scars (under 2 years). Older, established scars show modest improvement.
