Glossary
A small, established honey bee colony consisting of 4-5 frames of brood, food, and bees with a mated, laying queen. A nucleus colony (commonly called a nuc) is the recommended way for beginners to start beekeeping because it contains a functioning colony that can be transferred directly into a full-size hive.
A standard nuc contains: 2-3 frames of capped and open brood (developing bees), 1-2 frames of honey and pollen stores, a mated and laying queen, and approximately 10,000-15,000 adult worker bees. All of this comes in a small 5-frame box that serves as temporary housing.
The key advantage of a nuc over a package of bees: a nuc is an established colony. The queen is already laying, workers are already foraging, brood is already developing, and comb is already drawn. A package of bees starts with nothing and must build from scratch.
To install a nuc: set up your full-size Langstroth hive, transfer the 5 nuc frames into the center of the hive in the same order they were in the nuc box, fill flanking positions with frames of foundation, and close the hive. The existing colony continues operating with minimal disruption.
Timing: purchase nucs in spring when colonies are building up. Pre-order early (January-February) from reputable local beekeepers or suppliers because demand exceeds supply in most regions.
Nucs are generally better for beginners. They contain an established colony with a proven queen, drawn comb, and developing brood. Packages start from scratch and require more management skill during the critical establishment period. Nucs cost more ($150-250 vs. $120-160 for packages) but have higher success rates.
A healthy nuc installed in spring on a good nectar flow can fill a 10-frame deep brood box within 3-6 weeks. Adding the second brood box or first honey super depends on how quickly the colony fills the first box (when 7-8 frames are in use).
Local beekeepers and beekeeping associations are the best source. Local nucs contain bees adapted to your climate and are available for direct pickup (avoiding shipping stress). Many beekeeping clubs maintain nuc supplier lists.
