Glossary
An oil cold-pressed from Cannabis sativa seeds that contains no THC or CBD but is rich in linoleic acid (55-60%), alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Hemp seed oil is one of the best facial oils for oily and acne-prone skin due to its high linoleic content and non-comedogenic profile.
Hemp seed oil has one of the most balanced essential fatty acid profiles of any plant oil: approximately 55 to 60% linoleic acid (omega-6), 15 to 20% alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), and 1 to 4% gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This 3:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio closely matches the ideal ratio recommended for skin health. The high linoleic acid content makes it outstanding for oily and acne-prone skin, where low linoleic acid levels in sebum are associated with clogged pores and breakouts.
Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seeds of Cannabis sativa. It contains no THC (the psychoactive compound) and no CBD (the therapeutic cannabinoid). CBD oil and hemp seed oil are completely different products. Hemp seed oil's value in skincare comes entirely from its fatty acid composition and vitamin E content, not from cannabinoids. The seeds contain none of the resin glands where cannabinoids are produced.
Linoleic acid replenishment: Helps balance the oleic-to-linoleic ratio in sebum, reducing comedone formation in acne-prone skin. GLA anti-inflammatory: Gamma-linolenic acid is a precursor to anti-inflammatory prostaglandins that can reduce redness and inflammation in conditions like eczema and rosacea. Vitamin E antioxidant: Natural tocopherol content provides antioxidant protection. Lightweight texture: Absorbs quickly without greasy residue, making it comfortable for oily skin that rejects heavier oils.
Despite being an oil, hemp seed oil absorbs quickly and does not leave a greasy residue. Its high linoleic acid content actually helps regulate sebum production in oily skin over time. It is rated 0 on the comedogenic scale (non-comedogenic) and is one of the few oils dermatologists suggest for acne-prone skin.
