Glossary
A skincare regimen focused on the feet, particularly addressing the common problems of dry, rough, and cracked heels. The skin on the soles of the feet is the thickest on the body (up to 4mm versus 1-2mm elsewhere) and lacks sebaceous glands, making it dependent on external moisturizing for adequate hydration.
The soles of the feet contain no sebaceous glands. Unlike facial or body skin that produces its own sebum-based moisture, the soles rely entirely on perspiration (sweat glands, which provide water but not oil) and external moisturizing for hydration. This lack of natural oil is why feet become dry and cracked even when the rest of the body's skin is healthy.
The thickness of foot skin compounds the problem. Thick skin requires more intensive moisture delivery to reach its full depth. Light body lotions that work well on arms and legs simply cannot penetrate deeply enough to hydrate foot skin adequately.
The most effective natural foot care routine has three steps: exfoliate, moisturize, and seal. Exfoliate rough heels 1-2 times per week with a pumice stone or foot file to remove dead, thickened skin. Apply a thick, beeswax-based balm or body butter generously to clean, damp feet. Then put on cotton socks to hold the product in contact with the skin overnight.
Our Body Butter and Lotion Bars are ideal for foot care because they deliver concentrated lipids (beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter) without water dilution. The beeswax forms an occlusive barrier that keeps the rich butters in contact with stubborn heel skin for hours, allowing deep penetration that thin lotions cannot achieve.
With consistent daily moisturizing (using a thick, occlusive product) and weekly exfoliation, most cracked heels show significant improvement within 1-2 weeks and full resolution within 3-4 weeks. Severe, bleeding cracks may require professional evaluation.
Urea at 20-40 percent concentration is effective for very thick, stubborn heel calluses. For routine maintenance and moderate dryness, a rich beeswax-based product provides excellent results without the tingling and mild irritation that high-urea products can cause.
Yes, and they are excellent for it. Warm the lotion bar in your hands and apply generously to clean, damp feet, focusing on heels and soles. Put on cotton socks immediately. The beeswax barrier keeps the shea and cocoa butter working all night.
