Glossary
Collagen that has been broken down through hydrolysis into smaller peptide chains that are more easily absorbed by the body. Collagen peptides are consumed as dietary supplements (powders, capsules, and liquids) to support skin elasticity, hydration, joint health, and connective tissue repair.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, comprising approximately 75 to 80 percent of the skin's dry weight. Starting around age 25, collagen production decreases by roughly 1 percent per year, leading to the gradual loss of skin firmness, elasticity, and hydration that characterizes aging.
Oral collagen peptide supplementation has gained substantial clinical evidence in recent years. A 2019 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology reviewed 11 studies with over 800 participants and concluded that collagen supplementation significantly improved skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle depth compared to placebo groups.
An important distinction: topical collagen in creams and serums cannot penetrate the skin to increase collagen levels, because collagen molecules are too large to pass through the epidermis. The most effective approach to collagen support is oral supplementation for building blocks plus topical products that protect existing collagen.
This is where natural skincare plays a supporting role. Beeswax-based products protect the skin barrier, reducing the environmental damage that degrades collagen. Antioxidant-rich raw honey applied as a face mask provides free radical protection. Sun protection remains the single most important measure for preserving existing collagen.
Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that oral collagen peptide supplementation improves skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle appearance. Most studies show results within 4 to 12 weeks of daily supplementation at doses of 2.5 to 10 grams per day.
Yes. Bone broth, chicken skin, fish skin, and pig skin are naturally rich in collagen. However, collagen peptide supplements provide the protein in pre-hydrolyzed form that is more efficiently absorbed than whole-food collagen sources.
Type I collagen makes up approximately 80 percent of skin collagen and is the most relevant for skin health. Most marine collagen supplements are predominantly Type I. Bovine collagen contains Types I and III. For skin-specific benefits, Type I collagen peptides are preferred.
