How I Formulate for Real Skin, Not Perfect Skin

Perfect skin has never interested me.

Perhaps that is because I have spent so much of my life outdoors. Bees do not live in controlled environments. They live in wind, heat, cold, rain, and drought. Their wings tear. Their bodies wear. The hive bears the marks of every season it survives.

And yet it functions.

When I look at skin, I see something similar. I see freckles from summers long past. Fine lines from years of expression. Texture that shifts with hormones, stress, and time. I see evidence of living.

That is real skin.

The beauty industry often presents an image of skin that is poreless, uniform, and untouched by age. It is smooth in a way that rarely exists outside of filtered light. When we compare ourselves to that standard, we begin to formulate our expectations around perfection.

But skin is not meant to be flawless. It is meant to be functional.

When I formulate at Goodfriend Honey Co., I am not trying to erase history. I am trying to support integrity. I am thinking about dryness that appears in winter. Sensitivity that flares after stress. Lines that deepen when moisture escapes too quickly.

Real skin has patterns.

One of the first things I consider is comfort. Does the formula reduce tightness by midday? Does it calm areas that tend to flush? Does it soften texture without forcing rapid change? These are not glamorous goals, but they are meaningful.

Real skin does not need constant correction. It needs reinforcement.

I have learned that many women are not actually asking for perfection. They are asking for relief. They want their makeup to sit more evenly because their skin is hydrated. They want their face to feel steady from morning to night. They want fewer surprises.

That begins with barrier support.

Instead of building formulas around aggressive resurfacing or constant stimulation, I focus on structure. Beeswax to slow moisture loss. Oils selected for how they integrate with the skin’s natural lipids. Butters to reduce inflammation and combat oxidative stress. These choices are not flashy. They are foundational.

Real skin also changes. What worked at twenty five may not work at forty five. Oil production declines. Recovery slows. Tolerance shifts. When I formulate, I think about skin that has lived through these changes. Skin that may be thinner, drier, or more reactive than it once was.

That skin does not need to be pushed harder. It needs to be supported more thoughtfully.

There is also humility in formulating for real skin. I know that no jar can erase every line or prevent every shift. I do not design products with that promise in mind. I design them to reduce friction. To provide protection. To create an environment where the skin can function more smoothly on its own.

Improvement over illusion.

When customers tell me their skin feels calmer, that they are using fewer products, that they are not chasing the next solution, I know the formula is doing its job. When they say their fine lines look softer because their skin is no longer dehydrated, I know we are supporting reality rather than fighting it.

Real skin has pores. It has movement. It has history.

As a beekeeper, I respect systems that endure. A hive does not strive to look untouched. It strives to survive and thrive through seasons. The comb may darken with time, but it remains strong if its structure is sound.

Skin is no different.

When I blend ingredients, I am thinking about longevity. I am thinking about how the formula will behave not just on the first application, but after weeks of consistent use. Will it help the skin feel less fragile? Will it reduce the need for constant layering?

Will it honor the fact that skin is alive?

At Goodfriend Honey, I formulate for women who live real lives. Who step into sunlight. Who feel stress. Who age. Who laugh. Who sleep on their sides and wake with lines that fade by afternoon.

I formulate for skin that breathes, changes, and tells a story.

Perfect skin is an image. Real skin is a system.

I choose to work with the system.
