Glossary
A powerful water-soluble antioxidant essential for collagen synthesis, skin brightening, and protection against UV-induced free radical damage. Vitamin C is one of the most clinically validated anti-aging skincare actives.
Vitamin C earns its place in skincare through three distinct mechanisms. First, it is a potent antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals generated by UV exposure, pollution, and normal metabolism. Second, it is an essential cofactor in collagen synthesis; without adequate Vitamin C, the body cannot produce collagen properly (this is why scurvy, severe Vitamin C deficiency, causes skin and gum deterioration). Third, it inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production, resulting in a brightening effect on dark spots and uneven skin tone.
L-ascorbic acid, the most potent and best-studied form of Vitamin C, is notoriously unstable. It oxidizes rapidly when exposed to light, air, and water, turning yellow-brown and losing its efficacy. An opened bottle of L-ascorbic acid serum may degrade within weeks to months. Formulators address this through airless packaging, stabilized derivatives (ascorbyl palmitate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl glucoside), and pH optimization (L-ascorbic acid is most effective and most stable at pH below 3.5).
Sea buckthorn oil, which we use in our Facial Balm, is one of the richest plant sources of Vitamin C. While the Vitamin C in sea buckthorn oil is primarily in the juice fraction rather than the oil, the oil retains meaningful antioxidant power through its carotenoid and tocopherol content. Rosehip oil is another natural source. These whole-plant sources deliver Vitamin C alongside synergistic compounds that enhance its activity, a benefit that isolated ascorbic acid formulations may not provide.
Clinical studies show benefits starting at 5% concentration, with optimal results at 10-20% L-ascorbic acid. Higher concentrations may increase irritation without proportional efficacy gains. For sensitive skin, start at 10% or use a gentler derivative like magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.
Morning application is recommended because Vitamin C's antioxidant activity helps protect against daytime UV-generated free radicals. Apply to clean skin before moisturizer and sunscreen. Some people also apply at night for collagen-boosting benefits.
