Shelf Life

SkincareHoney

Definition

The length of time a product remains safe, effective, and unchanged in quality under normal storage conditions. Raw honey has an essentially indefinite shelf life due to its low moisture and high sugar content, while water-free skincare products maintain quality for months without synthetic preservatives.

Honey: The Forever Food

Properly ripened raw honey has an essentially indefinite shelf life. Archaeologists have recovered 3,000-year-old honey from Egyptian tombs that was still edible. The combination of low moisture content (below 18%), high sugar concentration, acidic pH (3.2-4.5), and the presence of hydrogen peroxide from glucose oxidase creates an environment where bacteria, yeasts, and molds simply cannot survive.

That said, honey does change over time. It crystallizes (a natural physical process, not spoilage), darkens gradually through Maillard reactions, and its aromatic compounds fade. Enzymatic activity also decreases slowly at room temperature. These changes are cosmetic and nutritional, not safety concerns. A jar of honey from last year is perfectly safe to eat.

Water-Free Skincare

Our skincare products maintain their quality for 6 to 12 months or more under normal use conditions, without any synthetic preservatives. The secret is simple: no water. Bacteria need water to grow. A product made entirely of beeswax, butters, and oils provides no environment for microbial life. The natural Vitamin E in shea butter and argan oil provides additional protection against oxidative rancidity of the fats.

Storage Best Practices

Store honey in sealed containers at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Store skincare products in a cool, dry place, capped tightly after use. Avoid introducing water into solid skincare products (do not use wet fingers to scoop body butter from the jar). Keep products out of direct sunlight, which can degrade essential oils and accelerate oxidation of natural fats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does raw honey expire?

No. Raw honey stored properly in sealed containers does not expire. It may crystallize, darken, or lose some aromatic complexity over time, but it remains safe to consume indefinitely. If your honey crystallizes, gently warm the jar in warm water to reliquefy it.

How long do your skincare products last?

Our water-free skincare products maintain optimal quality for 6 to 12 months from the date of production. Because they contain no water and no synthetic preservatives, they last longer than most conventional water-based products while maintaining full effectiveness.
