Glossary
A chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting primarily the central face (cheeks, nose, chin, forehead), characterized by persistent redness, visible blood vessels, papules, and sometimes rhinophyma (thickened nose skin). Rosacea has no cure but can be managed with gentle skincare and medical treatment.
Rosacea affects an estimated 16 million Americans, yet many do not know they have it. It is often dismissed as sensitive skin, sunburn that will not go away, or adult acne. In reality, rosacea is a distinct chronic inflammatory condition with four recognized subtypes: erythematotelangiectatic (persistent redness and visible blood vessels), papulopustular (redness with acne-like bumps and pimples), phymatous (thickened, bumpy skin, most commonly on the nose), and ocular (eye dryness, irritation, and swelling).
Rosacea flare-ups are triggered by factors that increase facial blood flow or skin inflammation: sun exposure (the most common trigger), hot beverages, spicy foods, alcohol (especially red wine), temperature extremes, wind, stress, and certain skincare ingredients (alcohol, fragrance, menthol, witch hazel, certain essential oils). Identifying personal triggers through a symptom diary is one of the most effective management strategies.
The cardinal rule for rosacea skincare is gentleness. Use fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient products. Avoid physical scrubs, AHA/BHA acids, retinoids (until prescribed by a dermatologist at appropriate concentrations), and anything containing alcohol, menthol, or camphor. Cleanse with lukewarm water (never hot). Apply a gentle moisturizer consistently. Use mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide) daily, as UV exposure is the primary trigger for most rosacea patients.
Some natural ingredients are well-tolerated by rosacea-prone skin: niacinamide (anti-inflammatory, barrier-strengthening), azelaic acid (FDA-approved for rosacea), and gentle occlusives like beeswax and shea butter that protect without irritation. Our unscented products, formulated without fragrance or essential oils, are compatible with many rosacea management routines.
Currently, no. Rosacea is a chronic condition that can be managed but not cured. Treatment focuses on identifying and avoiding triggers, using gentle skincare, and in some cases, prescription medications (metronidazole, azelaic acid, ivermectin, or oral antibiotics for papulopustular flares).
Gentle, minimal-ingredient naturak skincare can be very compatible with rosacea management. Fragrance-free moisturizers with soothing ingredients like shea butter and beeswax protect the barrier without triggering irritation. However, some natural ingredients (essential oils, cinnamon, citrus) can trigger rosacea flares. Choose unscented products and always patch test.
