Retinol Purging

Back to Glossary
Skincare

Definition

A temporary increase in breakouts during the first 2 to 6 weeks of retinol use, caused by accelerated cell turnover pushing existing clogged pores and microcomedones to the surface faster than they would emerge naturally. Purging is a normal adjustment, not a sign that the product is wrong for your skin.

Why It Happens

Your skin constantly produces microcomedones: tiny, invisible plugs of sebum and dead cells forming deep in pores. Normally, these either resolve on their own or slowly develop into visible blemishes over weeks to months. Retinol accelerates cell turnover dramatically, compressing this timeline. Microcomedones that would have taken 6 to 8 weeks to surface are pushed up in 1 to 2 weeks. The result: a sudden wave of blemishes that were already forming beneath the surface, not new breakouts caused by the retinol.

Purging vs. Breakout

Purging: Occurs in areas where you typically break out. Lesions are small, resolve faster than usual, and the overall trend improves after 4 to 6 weeks. Breakout (reaction): Occurs in areas where you do not typically break out. Lesions are deeper, more painful, and do not improve after 6 to 8 weeks. If you are getting cystic acne in entirely new locations, the product may be causing a reaction, not a purge.

Timeline

Week 1 to 2: Skin may feel dry, slightly tight, or show mild flaking. Early purge blemishes may appear. Week 3 to 4: Peak purging period for most people. Existing microcomedones are being pushed out. Dryness may persist. Week 5 to 6: Purging subsides. New breakouts slow. Skin begins showing the texture and tone improvements that retinol provides. Week 8 to 12: Skin has adjusted. Breakout frequency is reduced. Texture is noticeably smoother. The "retinol glow" emerges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stop using retinol if I am purging?

No. Stopping during the purge means you endured the difficult phase without reaping the benefits. Push through for 6 to 8 weeks. If breakouts are manageable, continue at the same frequency. If they are severe, reduce to every 3rd night temporarily. Only stop if you suspect a true reaction (new breakout locations, persistent worsening beyond 8 weeks, or severe irritation).

How can I minimize purging?

Start with a low concentration (0.25 to 0.5% retinol). Use only 2 to 3 nights per week initially. Apply to fully dry skin (wet skin increases penetration and irritation). Buffer by applying moisturizer before retinol. Gradually increase frequency over 4 to 6 weeks. This slow introduction reduces the severity of purging without eliminating the adjustment entirely.
