Glossary
A term describing skincare ingredients or products that do not clog pores (comedones). Non-comedogenic ingredients allow the skin to breathe while providing moisture, making them suitable for acne-prone and oily skin types.
Every skincare ingredient can be rated on a comedogenic scale from 0 to 5, reflecting its likelihood of clogging pores. A rating of 0 means the ingredient is very unlikely to cause blocked pores. A rating of 5 means it is highly likely to cause comedones, the technical term for clogged pores that lead to blackheads, whiteheads, and acne breakouts.
Ingredients rated 0-2 are generally considered non-comedogenic and safe for most people, including those with acne-prone skin. Ingredients rated 3-5 are progressively more likely to cause problems, though individual reactions vary significantly. Someone with naturally dry, resilient skin may tolerate a rating-4 ingredient without issues, while someone with oily, reactive skin may break out from a rating-2 product.
Among natural oils commonly used in skincare, argan oil (rated 0), hemp seed oil (rated 0), jojoba oil (rated 2), and sunflower seed oil (rated 0) are considered non-comedogenic. These are preferred for facial applications where pore congestion is a concern. Heavier oils and butters like coconut oil (rated 4) and cocoa butter (rated 4) are better suited for body skin where pore size and oil production differ from the face.
This distinction drives our formulation choices. Our Silken Glow Facial Balm uses argan oil, kokum butter (rated 0-1), and mango butter (rated 2), all on the safe end of the comedogenic scale. Our body products use coconut oil and shea butter, which are fine for the larger pores and drier conditions of body skin.
The term "non-comedogenic" is not regulated by the FDA. Any company can put it on a label without testing. The best approach is to learn the comedogenic ratings of the key ingredients in your skincare and make informed decisions rather than relying on label claims alone.
The comedogenic scale rates skincare ingredients from 0 (will not clog pores) to 5 (highly likely to clog pores). Ingredients rated 0-2 are generally considered safe for acne-prone skin. The ratings are based on testing, though individual skin reactions can vary.
Beeswax has a comedogenic rating of 0-2 depending on the source and study. In practice, most people do not experience breakouts from beeswax because it forms a breathable barrier rather than plugging pores like petroleum-based occlusives.
Yes. Comedogenicity is one factor, but breakouts can also be caused by fragrances, preservatives, or individual sensitivities. Even a comedogenic-rating-0 product could trigger reactions in someone sensitive to one of its other ingredients.
