Manuka Honey Grading Systems

Definition

A consumer guide to understanding the multiple grading systems used for Manuka honey, including UMF (Unique Manuka Factor), MGO (methylglyoxal concentration), KFactor, and Bio Active, explaining what each measures, how they compare, and which ratings provide the most reliable quality assurance.

UMF (Unique Manuka Factor)

UMF is the original and most rigorous Manuka honey grading system, licensed by the UMF Honey Association in New Zealand. A UMF rating requires testing of four key markers: MGO concentration (antibacterial potency), DHA content (freshness indicator), HMF level (heat damage indicator), and leptosperin (authenticity marker confirming genuine Leptospermum scoparium origin).

UMF ratings range from 5+ (minimal antibacterial activity) to 25+ (very high therapeutic activity). For general wellness, UMF 10-15+ is commonly recommended. For therapeutic wound care, UMF 15-20+ is typical. The UMF license requires regular third-party testing and traceability.

MGO (Methylglyoxal)

MGO ratings directly measure the concentration of methylglyoxal in milligrams per kilogram of honey. This is a simpler, more direct measurement than UMF. Approximate conversions: MGO 83 equals UMF 5, MGO 263 equals UMF 10, MGO 514 equals UMF 15, MGO 829 equals UMF 20.

The advantage of MGO rating is its directness: you know exactly how much methylglyoxal is present. The disadvantage is that MGO alone does not verify authenticity (confirming the honey is from Leptospermum scoparium rather than artificially spiked with synthetic MGO).

Frequently Asked Questions

What UMF rating should I buy?

For daily wellness and eating: UMF 5-10 (affordable, mild activity). For enhanced immune support: UMF 10-15. For therapeutic use (sore throat, wound care): UMF 15-20. For clinical wound care: UMF 20+ (expensive, maximum potency). Higher is not always necessary for general dietary use.

Is higher MGO always better?

Higher MGO means higher antibacterial potency, but it also means higher price. For everyday use, moderate MGO (250-400) provides meaningful benefits without premium pricing. Very high MGO (800+) is most justified for specific therapeutic applications.

Can Manuka honey grading be faked?

Unfortunately, yes. Manuka honey fraud is a significant global problem (more Manuka is sold worldwide than New Zealand produces). Buy only from reputable brands carrying official UMF or MGO certification with batch traceability. Be skeptical of unusually cheap Manuka honey.
