Glossary
A guide to selecting the appropriate plant-based facial oil based on individual skin type, concerns, and goals. The right facial oil depends on the dominant fatty acid profile of the oil and how it interacts with your skin's own sebum composition.
Oily and acne-prone skin benefits from oils high in linoleic acid (omega-6): grapeseed oil (70 percent linoleic, comedogenic rating 1), hemp seed oil (55 percent linoleic, rating 0), and rosehip oil (44 percent linoleic, rating 1). These lightweight oils help normalize sebum composition and reduce the thick, pore-clogging sebum associated with acne.
Dry and mature skin benefits from oils high in oleic acid (omega-9): avocado oil (63 percent oleic), sweet almond oil (65 percent oleic), and shea butter (40-60 percent oleic). These penetrate deeply and provide lasting moisture. The richer texture of oleic acid-dominant oils matches what dry skin craves.
Apply 3 to 5 drops of facial oil to clean, slightly damp skin. The dampness helps the oil absorb and distribute evenly. Gently press (not rub) the oil into your face and neck. Allow 1-2 minutes for absorption before applying any additional products.
Facial oil can be used alone (for minimalists), under a heavier moisturizer (for maximum hydration), or mixed into your regular moisturizer (for enhanced richness). In a natural skincare routine, a few drops of facial oil applied before a beeswax-based face balm creates a layered moisture system: the oil nourishes deeply while the beeswax seals it in.
Not if you choose the right oil. Linoleic acid-rich oils (grapeseed, hemp seed) actually help regulate sebum production in oily skin. The counterintuitive truth is that properly hydrated oily skin often produces less excess sebum.
Facial oil provides emollient moisture but lacks the occlusive protection of a beeswax-based moisturizer. For most skin types, the combination is more effective: oil for nourishment and moisturizer for barrier protection. Very oily skin types may find oil alone sufficient.
Jojoba oil is considered the most universally appropriate facial oil because it most closely mimics human sebum in structure. It has a comedogenic rating of 2, absorbs well, and is tolerated by virtually all skin types. Squalane is another excellent universal option.
