Glossary
A two-step facial cleansing method originating from Korean skincare practice. The first cleanse uses an oil-based cleanser to dissolve oil-soluble debris (sunscreen, makeup, sebum). The second cleanse uses a water-based cleanser to remove remaining water-soluble impurities.
Modern life coats our skin in a complex mix of substances: sunscreen, makeup, environmental pollution, excess sebum, and sweat. Some of these are oil-soluble (sunscreen, makeup, sebum). Others are water-soluble (sweat, some environmental debris). A single cleanser, whether oil-based or water-based, is optimized to remove one type but may leave the other behind. Double cleansing addresses both categories sequentially.
Apply a cleansing oil, cleansing balm, or micellar oil to dry skin and massage gently for 30 to 60 seconds. The oil dissolves sunscreen, makeup, and excess sebum through the principle of "like dissolves like." Oil-soluble debris binds to the cleansing oil and lifts away from the skin. Emulsify with a splash of water (quality oil cleansers turn milky when combined with water) and rinse.
Follow immediately with a gentle, water-based cleanser (gel, foam, or cream) to remove any remaining residue, water-soluble impurities, and cleanser residue from step one. This leaves the skin truly clean without the stripped, tight feeling that comes from using an aggressive single cleanser.
Double cleansing provides the most noticeable benefit for people who wear sunscreen daily (which should be everyone), wear makeup, live in polluted urban environments, or have oily skin that produces significant sebum throughout the day. For people with minimal product use and dry skin, a single gentle cleanse may be sufficient.
You can, but coconut oil has a comedogenic rating of 4/5 on the face, which means it may clog pores in some people. Dedicated cleansing oils formulated with emulsifiers rinse more cleanly than plain coconut oil. If you want a natural oil cleanser, jojoba oil or hemp seed oil are less comedogenic options.
Not if you use gentle products. The purpose of double cleansing is to reduce the need for harsh scrubbing by letting chemistry do the work. Choose a gentle oil cleanser and a mild, fragrance-free water-based cleanser. The result should feel clean and comfortable, not tight or stripped.
