Glossary
A two-step facial cleansing method originating from Korean and Japanese skincare traditions. The first step uses an oil-based cleanser to dissolve oil-soluble impurities (sunscreen, sebum, makeup), followed by a water-based cleanser to remove water-soluble residue (sweat, dirt, pollution). Together they ensure complete cleansing without harsh stripping.
Your face accumulates two categories of impurities throughout the day: oil-soluble (sunscreen, sebum, makeup, pollution particles bound to oils) and water-soluble (sweat, dead cells, water-soluble dirt). A single cleanser is optimized for one category or the other. A water-based cleanser struggles to fully remove oil-based sunscreen. An oil-based cleanser does not remove water-soluble sweat effectively. Double cleansing uses the right tool for each job, in sequence.
Apply an oil cleanser (cleansing oil, cleansing balm, or micellar oil) to dry skin. Massage for 60 seconds. The oil dissolves sebum, breaks down sunscreen and makeup at the molecular level (like dissolves like), and lifts oil-trapped particles from pores. Add water to emulsify and rinse. The oil converts to a milky emulsion that rinses clean.
Follow with a gentle, pH-balanced (5.0 to 5.5) water-based cleanser on damp skin. This removes any remaining water-soluble residue, traces of the oil cleanser, and completes the cleansing process. The result: thoroughly clean skin that is not stripped, tight, or irritated.
Evening: Always (you are removing an entire day's accumulation of sunscreen, sebum, and environmental exposure). Morning: Not necessary (overnight accumulation is minimal; a single gentle cleanse or even just water is sufficient). Non-sunscreen days at home: Optional (without sunscreen and heavy products, a single gentle cleanser may suffice).
Coconut oil can dissolve makeup and sunscreen effectively, but it has a comedogenic rating of 4 (high). For acne-prone skin, use a formulated cleansing oil or balm designed to emulsify and rinse clean. For non-acne-prone skin, coconut oil works but must be followed thoroughly with a water-based cleanser to remove residue.
Raw honey is an excellent gentle cleanser for the second step, particularly for sensitive skin. Its antimicrobial properties address bacteria while its humectant properties prevent the tight, stripped feeling of harsh cleansers. Apply raw honey to damp skin, massage for 60 seconds, and rinse with warm water. It does not remove sunscreen effectively, so pair with an oil cleanser first if wearing SPF.
