Glossary
Skin that has become thin, loose, and finely wrinkled, resembling the texture of crepe paper. Crepey skin develops when the skin loses its natural elasticity and moisture, typically due to aging, chronic sun exposure, dehydration, and the gradual decline of collagen and elastin production.
Crepey skin results from the intersection of multiple factors. Collagen production decreases by approximately 1 percent per year after age 25, gradually reducing the skin's structural support. Elastin, the protein responsible for skin's snap-back quality, also degrades with age and sun exposure. Combined with thinning of the dermis layer and reduced natural oil production, the result is skin that wrinkles, sags, and fails to bounce back when stretched.
UV radiation is the primary accelerator. Chronic sun exposure damages both collagen and elastin fibers through a process called photoaging. This is why crepey skin tends to appear first on sun-exposed areas like the arms, neck, chest, and hands, often years before it appears on sun-protected areas.
While no product can completely reverse established crepey skin, consistent moisturizing with rich, occlusive ingredients slows progression and improves appearance. Beeswax-based body butters and lotion bars excel here because they deliver concentrated moisture without the water dilution of conventional lotions. The beeswax creates a breathable barrier that prevents transepidermal water loss, keeping skin plumped with moisture for hours.
Shea butter and cocoa butter are particularly beneficial for crepey skin because they deliver vitamins A, E, and essential fatty acids that support cell regeneration and repair. Applying a natural body butter or lotion bar immediately after bathing, when the skin is damp, locks in maximum moisture.
mildly crepey skin can be significantly improved with consistent moisturizing, sun protection, and products that support collagen health. Severely crepey skin may not fully reverse but can be improved in appearance and comfort with proper care.
Rich, occlusive moisturizers that lock in hydration are most effective. Natural products with beeswax, shea butter, and plant oils outperform water-based lotions because they deliver concentrated moisture without evaporating. Our body butter and lotion bars are designed for exactly this purpose.
Yes. Daily sunscreen use is the single most effective preventive measure for crepey skin, as UV radiation is the primary cause of collagen and elastin breakdown. Combining sunscreen with antioxidant-rich moisturizers provides the best protection.
