Glossary
A rich, deeply nourishing oil cold-pressed from the flesh (not the seed) of the avocado fruit (Persea americana). Avocado oil is uniquely rich in chlorophylls, carotenoids, phytosterols, and vitamins A, D, and E, providing comprehensive skin nourishment and repair capacity that most other carrier oils lack.
Avocado oil's fatty acid composition (approximately 60 percent oleic acid, 15 percent palmitic acid, 10 percent linoleic acid) makes it a moderately heavy oil that provides deep moisturizing without excessive greasiness. Its oleic acid content gives it excellent penetration into the skin.
Beyond fatty acids, avocado oil contains sterolins (phytosterols that reduce age spots and sun damage), vitamins A and E (antioxidant protection), chlorophylls (anti-inflammatory), and squalene (sebum-compatible moisturizing). This nutrient density sets it apart from simpler carrier oils.
Avocado oil shines in intensive treatments for dry, mature, and sun-damaged skin. Its depth of penetration and nutrient density make it ideal for overnight facial oils, body oils, and hair treatments. It is too heavy for daily use on oily skin but excellent for dry and normal skin types.
In formulation, avocado oil adds richness to balms and body butters. Combined with beeswax, it creates a particularly nourishing hand and foot balm. Its natural green tint (from chlorophyll) can color light-colored products, which some formulators consider a premium visual indicator.
Avocado oil has a comedogenic rating of 2-3 (moderate). It is generally fine for body use but may clog pores on acne-prone facial skin. For facial use on oily or acne-prone skin, lighter oils like jojoba or squalane are better choices. For dry skin, avocado oil is usually well-tolerated on the face.
Yes, for dry and normal skin types. Apply 3-4 drops to clean skin before bed. The overnight application period allows deep penetration. Avocado oil's vitamin E content provides antioxidant protection during the night's skin repair cycle.
Avocado oil contains phytosterols (sterolins) that have been shown in studies to reduce age spots and hyperpigmentation. While not as fast-acting as dedicated brightening agents, consistent use over weeks to months can improve skin tone and reduce dark spots.
