An evidence-based examination of the popular combination of raw apple cider vinegar and raw honey, known historically as oxymel (from the Greek for acid and honey). What Science Supports

Acetic acid in vinegar has documented blood glucose-moderating effects. Adding honey to ACV provides fructose (which has a lower glycemic index than glucose), antioxidants, and natural enzymes.

Oxymel: The Ancient Formula

Oxymel, a preparation of honey and vinegar, has been used in traditional medicine since at least 400 BCE, when Hippocrates prescribed it for respiratory complaints, digestive issues, and as a general health tonic. The word itself comes from the Greek oxymeli (acid honey).

To make a traditional oxymel: combine 1 part raw apple cider vinegar with 2 parts raw honey. Mix thoroughly and store in a glass jar. Take 1 tablespoon in a glass of warm water, daily. Does ACV and honey cure anything?

The combination does not cure diseases. It provides documented modest benefits for blood glucose management (from the acetic acid) and general antioxidant support (from the honey). Claims about cancer prevention, dramatic weight loss, and disease reversal are unsupported by clinical evidence.

Is the mother in ACV important?

The mother (the cloudy strand of proteins, enzymes, and beneficial bacteria in unfiltered ACV) contains probiotics and enzymes that may provide additional gut health benefits. Filtered, pasteurized ACV still contains acetic acid but lacks the probiotic component.

Can ACV damage tooth enamel?

Yes. Acetic acid erodes tooth enamel over time with regular direct contact. Always dilute ACV in water, drink through a straw to minimize tooth contact, and rinse your mouth with plain water afterward. Never drink undiluted vinegar.
