An essential trace mineral critical for skin health, involved in over 300 enzymatic processes including wound healing, collagen synthesis, sebum regulation, and immune response. Zinc deficiency causes dermatitis, delayed wound healing, and increased acne severity. Both topical and dietary zinc support skin health.
Zinc is the second most abundant trace mineral in the body, with the highest concentrations found in the epidermis (5 to 6 times higher than the dermis). This concentration is not accidental: zinc is a cofactor for over 300 enzymes involved in virtually every aspect of skin function. Without adequate zinc, the skin's ability to heal, produce collagen, fight infection, and regulate oil production is systematically impaired.
Wound healing: Zinc is essential for every phase (inflammation, proliferation, remodeling). Deficiency delays healing measurably. This is why zinc oxide paste is a foundational wound care product. Collagen synthesis: Zinc-dependent enzymes (collagenase, elastase) regulate the collagen production and remodeling cycle. Sebum regulation: Zinc inhibits 5-alpha-reductase (the enzyme that activates DHT, the hormone that drives sebum production). This anti-androgenic effect reduces oil output in acne-prone skin. Immune defense: Zinc supports innate immune function in the skin, including antimicrobial peptide production and macrophage activity. Anti-inflammatory: Zinc reduces NF-kB activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine production, calming inflammatory skin conditions.
Dietary: Oysters (by far the richest source), beef, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, lentils, yogurt. The recommended daily intake is 8 mg (women) to 11 mg (men). Topical: Zinc oxide (physical UV blocker in mineral sunscreen, wound healing), zinc pyrithione (antifungal, anti-dandruff), zinc gluconate (anti-acne serums). Supplemental: 15 to 30 mg/day zinc picolinate or zinc gluconate can improve acne in individuals with demonstrated deficiency.
In people who are zinc-deficient (which is common; an estimated 2 billion people worldwide are zinc-deficient), supplementation of 30 to 45 mg daily has been shown to reduce acne lesion counts in clinical studies. The effect is modest compared to prescription treatments but meaningful as a complementary approach. Get your zinc levels tested before mega-dosing, as excess zinc depletes copper.
Zinc oxide is the only single sunscreen ingredient that provides true broad-spectrum protection across the entire UVA and UVB range. It works by physical reflection and scattering rather than chemical absorption, making it the gentlest option for sensitive and reactive skin. Its main drawback is white cast, which newer formulations (micronized zinc oxide) have reduced significantly.
