The Do-Everything Ingredient

Niacinamide has earned a reputation as perhaps the most versatile active ingredient in skincare. Unlike ingredients that target a single concern (retinol for wrinkles, salicylic acid for acne), niacinamide addresses multiple skin issues simultaneously. It increases ceramide production (strengthening the moisture barrier), reduces melanin transfer to the skin surface (improving uneven tone), regulates sebum production (reducing oiliness), stimulates collagen synthesis (reducing fine lines), and reduces inflammatory markers (calming redness).

How It Works

Niacinamide is a precursor to NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a coenzyme essential for cellular energy production and repair. When applied topically, niacinamide is readily absorbed into the epidermis and converted to NAD+, boosting cellular energy and supporting the skin's natural repair and renewal processes. The effects are cumulative, building with consistent use over weeks.

One of niacinamide's greatest strengths is its compatibility with virtually every other skincare ingredient. It pairs well with retinol (buffering some of retinol's irritation), hyaluronic acid (complementary hydration), vitamin C (despite an old myth about incompatibility, modern formulations work fine together), and AHA/BHA acids. Niacinamide is found naturally in foods like yeast, meats, fish, milk, eggs, green vegetables, and cereals. In skincare, it is typically synthesized for precise concentration control. What concentration of niacinamide works best?

Studies show benefits at concentrations of 2-5%. Higher concentrations (10%) may increase efficacy for some concerns but can cause mild irritation in sensitive individuals. Start with 5% and increase if your skin tolerates it well.

Can I use niacinamide every day?

Yes. Niacinamide is gentle enough for twice-daily use in most people. It does not cause photosensitivity (unlike retinol or AHAs), so it is safe for morning and evening application without additional sun protection concerns.
