Skincare products containing ingredients that have undergone controlled microbial fermentation, breaking down molecules into smaller, more easily absorbed forms and generating beneficial metabolites (amino acids, peptides, organic acids) not present in the original ingredient.

Why Fermentation Works

Fermentation uses microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, fungi) to break down complex molecules into simpler, more bioavailable forms. In skincare, this means: larger molecules (polyphenols, proteins, vitamins) are broken into smaller fragments that penetrate skin more easily. The fermentation process generates new beneficial compounds (amino acids, peptides, organic acids, vitamins) not present in the original ingredient. Potentially irritating compounds are neutralized or transformed into gentler forms.

Star Fermented Ingredients

Galactomyces ferment filtrate: Produced by the yeast Galactomyces (same genus used in sake production). Rich in vitamins, amino acids, and organic acids. The hero ingredient in SK-II's Facial Treatment Essence. Saccharomyces ferment filtrate: A yeast ferment that produces beta-glucan (immune-modulating and soothing), B vitamins, and amino acids. Used in numerous K-beauty products. Fermented rice water: Traditional Japanese and Korean beauty secret. Rice starch fermented by Lactobacillus produces ferulic acid, allantoin, and amino acids. Fermented honey: Naturally occurring fermentation in honey produces additional organic acids and peptides. Raw honey applied to skin provides both preserved and fermented bioactives.

The K-Beauty Connection

Korean and Japanese skincare traditions have used fermented ingredients for centuries (sake lees masks, fermented soybean treatments, rice water rinses). Modern K-beauty brands systematized these traditions into standardized, researched products. The global popularity of fermented skincare is one of K-beauty's most significant contributions to the wider skincare industry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is fermented skincare better than regular skincare?

Fermentation genuinely increases bioavailability and generates beneficial metabolites. However, 'fermented' is not automatically superior to all non-fermented products. A well-formulated vitamin C serum at 15% concentration may outperform a fermented extract for specific antioxidant goals. Fermented ingredients excel at delivering complex, multi-compound benefits with improved skin penetration and gentleness.

Can fermented products cause breakouts?

Some fermented ingredients contain natural yeast metabolites that can trigger Malassezia-related breakouts (fungal acne) in susceptible individuals. If you have a history of fungal acne or Malassezia sensitivity, patch test fermented products carefully. Most people tolerate fermented skincare without issues.
