Glossary
A naturally occurring compound found in the comfrey plant (Symphytum officinale), wheat sprouts, and chamomile that is FDA-approved as an over-the-counter skin protectant. Allantoin promotes cell proliferation, soothes irritation, and is one of the gentlest active ingredients available for sensitive and damaged skin.
Allantoin stimulates cell proliferation and wound healing by promoting the growth of new tissue. It softens keratin (the protein in the outer skin layer), making skin smoother and helping to remove dead cells. It is also a documented anti-irritant, meaning it calms and soothes irritated skin rather than triggering further sensitivity.
These combined properties (wound healing plus keratin softening plus anti-irritation) make allantoin valuable in post-procedure products, sensitive skin formulations, shaving products (it soothes razor irritation), and diaper rash treatments.
Allantoin is a naturally derived compound that meets clean beauty standards while providing clinically validated skin benefits. It works well at concentrations of 0.5-2 percent and is compatible with virtually all other skincare ingredients.
In natural formulations paired with beeswax and honey, allantoin adds a cell-renewal and soothing dimension that complements honey's antimicrobial benefits and beeswax's barrier protection.
Allantoin occurs naturally in comfrey root, wheat sprouts, chamomile, and sugar beets. However, most allantoin in cosmetics is synthetically produced (identical to the natural compound) because synthetic production is more consistent and sustainable than plant extraction.
Allantoin is one of the safest and gentlest active ingredients available. It is FDA-approved as a skin protectant, is non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and specifically used to calm sensitive and irritated skin. Allergic reactions are extremely rare.
Wound healing, soothing irritation, softening rough skin, reducing redness, and promoting cell turnover. It is particularly useful in lip care (healing chapped lips), hand cream (softening rough skin), post-shave products (soothing razor burn), and baby care (diaper rash).
